Closing the year - 2020 - on a positive note!
Sculpturally, this year, has been very fertile for me - there has been time for introspection and creativity, which has allowed me to express myself in an almost uninterrupted way. International travel has been non existent and with limited national travel I have found inspiration from within and from my readings and the goings on around me. There have been emotional ups and downs, however being able to express myself sculpturally has been a constant that has kept me sane!
I am also very appreciative for the positive response I get about my work and I am truely grateful to all of you for your ongoing support and interest.
Some of the highlights of this year was that my work was featured in Russh Magazine’s Chanel Beauty feature, curated by Christelle Scifo. Christelle could envisage my work blending with her model, and in the image that went to print, they almost look like one!
A selection of my works was also loaned by the Louis Vuitton Sydney flagship store for their Sydney Exotics Presentation styled by Al Weekes in October. My organic sculptures melded in to the beautiful environment that Al created for this exclusive event, and I am very grateful to him and also his assistant Indi.
A full circle happened when two of my sculptures appeared in VOGUE Polska (Poland) magazine a few months ago - enthusiastic collector and aesthete Zofia Chylak was featured in her home surrounded by some of her gorgeous art collection and also two of my sculptures - Dora and Bubbe. A link to the article is here (but you’ll have to be able to read Polish!!). Thank you Zofia for your vision and connection to my practice, I know the sculptures are in a loving home and well cared for. Scroll down for some images :)
In November 2020, Home Beautiful magazine wrote an insightful article on me for their ‘Creative Collection’ series - and I would like to thank Harriet Sim, Sandy Dao and Kristina Soljo (photographer) for their encouragement. The article provides a glimpse into my influences and practice and I am thankful to have it as a memento.
In regards to art prizes - I was very pleased to have had two works selected as finalists in Sculpture in the Vineyards (October 2020) in Wollombi in the beautiful Hunter Valley. Wendy Black, a wonderful sculptor in her own right, was the curator of this exhibition which gained much praise from locals and all who visited.
I was also thrilled to have been selected as a finalist in the 20th Anniversary Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize 2020 (the exhibition has been pushed back to April 2021). Entry into this exhibition is highly competitive, and it was reassuring for me to be selected as a finalist as there were 844 entries for this prize and only 56 sculptures were chosen as finalists. Rivkah - my major work of 2019/2020 was selected and she (and I) could not be more happy. The WSSP will open in the new Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf (the newly converted Woollahra Library) in April 2021, I’ll keep you updated as the time draws closer.
I would also like to thank Becker Minty (Jason), M Contemporary (Michelle and Louise) and Modern Times (Sarah, Amy and Pip) galleries for their support and enthusiasm of my work over the past year. Modern Times currently have an exhibition titled ’Talismans, Rafts, Mementos’ in Melbourne, where I have a few small works on show. It is well worth looking up if you are in Melbourne - or here online.
I wish you all well, and hope you have an enjoyable summer break (or winter break if you are in the northern hemisphere), happy festive season and a safe and positive New Year.
